Do you want to take your bicycle with you on an international train within Europe? And what kind of bike is it: a regular bicycle, a mountain bike, a track bike, a recumbent bicycle or a tandem? It's possible to take your bike on those trains that have special bike area's.
Buying or reserving a bicycle ticket
It is not yet possible to book your trip online when travelling with a bicycle. To book your trip with bicycle ticket, you can contact NS International Service Center, the NS International counter at one of the Tickets & Service offices at the larger train stations or your travel agency.

Taking your bicycle on board Intercity Brussels
It is permitted to take a bicycle on Intercity Brussels trains. Passengers do need an international bicycle ticket that costs about €12.00 one-way. You may take a maximum of one bicycle per person. Folding bicycle A folding bicycle is permitted free of charge but does need to be folded and packed and placed above or under a seat or placed in the vestibules. Please note: - It is your own responsibility to load and unload the bicycle. - It is not permitted to leave luggage strapped to the bicycle during the trip.
Taking your bicycle on board Thalys
On board Thalys, a bicycle is only allowed if it is packed in a special bicycle slipcover (maximum dimensions: 120x90 cm). The front and back weel can be removed and the bicycle rack detached, so that the bicycle fits in the 120x90cm bicycle slipcover. The bicycle is then considered a luggage item. A folding bike is permitted as long as it is folded and packed.
Taking your bicycle on board TGV
On board TGV, a bicycle is only allowed if its front wheel has been removed and if the bicycle is packed in a special bicycle slipcover (maximum dimensions: 120x90 cm).
Taking your bicycle on board Eurostar
It is permitted to take (folding) bicycles on the Eurostar. These do need to be dismantled and packed in special slipcovers that are no larger than a regular suitcase. Tandems are not permitted. For passengers travelling between Brussels/Paris/Lille and London, it is possible to transport a bicycle as registered luggage. Bicycles can be registered at the luggage offices.
Tip: We do advise these passengers to pack them and place a protective slipcover over them and to have a travel insurance that covers the transport of the bicycle. The costs of transporting the bicycle as registered luggage are €25.00.
Taking your bicycle on board ICE International
Unfortunately NS and DB have different rules for transporting bicycles and folding bikes.
ICE on the domestic Dutch route
- ICE passengers with an NS domestic ticket may take an unpacked folding bicycle with them.
- ICE passengers with an internationaal ticket may take a packed folding bicycle with them (unpacked folding bicycles are not permitted).
- ICE passengers are not permitted to take regular bicycles with them, not even when they are dismantled and packed unless they completely fit and are placed in a suitcase that is no larger than 85cm.
ICE on the domestic German route
Folding bicycles and regular bicycles are only permitted in ICE as luggage provided that they are dismantled and packed in a special bicycle slipcover (maximum dimensions: 120x90 cm).
Taking your bicycle on board in Intercity Berlin
It is permitted to take a bicycle on board Intercity Berlin trains. You will need an international bicycle ticket that costs about € 12 one-way. A reservation for your bicycle is also mandatory, and this costs € 4.00 one-way. Passengers may take up to one bicycle per person.
Folding bicycle A folding bicycle is also permitted when folded and packed. A folding bicycle must then be placed above of under a seat, or placed in the vestibules. A reservation for a folding bicycle is not necessary.
